The kitchen is done!! Almost. It was wonderful to be back in the kitchen after fixing food in the dining room and washing dishes in the bathroom for months. With the appliances installed and operational and all the drawer and door handles attached we were able figure out where to store all our foodstuffs, dishes and utensils in the new space. A few things still need to be done – the pot rack, shelves to the left of the kitchen sink window, two small holes in the drywall that still need to be filled in and painted over, one electrical outlet that was overlooked. We love our cork floor!
Upstairs in the new bedroom we left part of the wall of the original 1880s house showing, one full plank and part of one above and below it. The boards there are over a foot wide and you can see marks from the saw blade that cut the wood. To keep warm air from going into the attic my husband put insulation in the cracks between the boards and then covered the space with trim. I painted the trim dark blue to match the two end walls and I also painted a dresser with that same dark blue, using the lighter blue for the drawer handles. (See Photo) There is a new glass block window in our upstairs bath which is now an interior window and we kept the original exterior divided-light door that opened out to the flat roof over the kitchen (which still needs to be scraped and repainted).
