Barsness is the daughter of Bob and Gail Barsness of Prior Lake. She's a Prior Lake High School and St. Olaf College graduate. She will graduate in December from St. Kate’s with a master’s degree in library and information science and pursue a career as a media specialist in a school. She's employed as a manager of an independent children’s bookstore in Minneapolis.

Winkel is the son of Russ and Suzy Winkel of Richfield. He's a Richfield High School graduate. He's finishing his fire science degree and will begin paramedic school at HCMC next summer to become a full-time firefighter. He's employed by the Richfield School District and is a paid on-call firefighter for Edina.

A May 2009 wedding is planned.
