We are moving into the doldrums of summer. Gone are the fast-paced days of spring when the pre-dawns are filled with hundreds of singing birds and the cool nights are filled with a million calling frogs.

At this time of year, most of the birds are wrapping up nesting. The fevered pitch of spring-time nesting is over for another year. It’s time for the adult birds and their young to have a few weeks of relative calm and prosperity before moving into the next phase of avian life.

When Laurel Glewwe lost her job as a human resources manager in February due to the slumping economy, she didn’t think it could turn to her advantage.

But Glewwe found herself with much more time to devote to her family’s Spring Lake Township business, Castle Brewery, which makes and bottles homemade root beer.

“It turned out OK,” she says.



Integra cable TV decision upheld

Prior Lake City Council members on Monday rejected a request by Mediacom to reconsider approval of a cable TV franchise agreement with Integra Telecom, which became Mediacom’s first competitor in town after the council’s June 15 decision.

Since the council approved the franchise agreement with Integra, Mediacom has sent letters to the city seeking reconsideration, saying the agreement violates state law and constitutes a breach in the franchise agreement between Mediacom and the city.



Without major changes, city will face ‘continual’ budget struggle

Simply slashing spending or raising taxes isn’t enough of a budgetary solution for Prior Lake Mayor Jack Haugen, who on Monday urged fellow councilmen and city staffers to consider creative ways to solve a $900,000 budget crunch.

“I don’t think it takes any skill or leadership to cut,” Haugen said during a workshop on the 2010 budget. “What takes skill and leadership is creating solutions that continue to enhance people’s quality of life.”
