The former Hollywood Bar and Grill, 16691 Highway 13, has been purchased by new owners and is expected to open as Basement Bar and Grill in the next couple of weeks.

Steven McKenna, the new owner, got approval on June 16 for on-sale and Sunday liquor licenses for the bar, which he said he has been working to upgrade. Steve Higgins, who represents the group that owns Doherty’s Tavern on the border of Spring Lake and Cedar Lake townships, is a partner in the Basement venture.

McKenna also is applying to the state for a license to allow the bar to stay open until 2 a.m.

Hollywood closed in November 2007 after the state Health Department found numerous building code violations, including outdated equipment, inadequate ventilation and floor tiles, walls and ceilings that were falling apart. The department had given Hollywood permission to continue operating even though the business’ food license expired in December 2006.– Lori Carlson
